16 Oct 2026Jefferies identifies an encouraging signal in the Nasdaq recovery during volatile trading on Thursday, despite sharp technology losses unsettling the market. The Nasdaq erased an intraday decline of more than 1% and finished slightly higher, with the Nasdaq 100 recording one of its strongest intraday recoveries since April. Jefferies sees that reversal as a potential sign of improving market conditions heading into the final two months of the year.
Trading opened under heavy pressure after the U.S. Producer Price Index surprised with a monthly increase of 1.3%, while semiconductor stocks continued weakening. Nvidia, Micron and other artificial intelligence companies traded lower as investors questioned how long substantial data-center investment could continue in a high-interest-rate environment. Buyers entered during the session, pushing the indexes into positive territory.
The Dow Jones gained 1.1%, the S&P 500 advanced 0.3%, and the Nasdaq rose approximately 0.1%. The Russell 2000 small-cap index climbed 1.4%. Gains across a broad range of sectors produced a positive Wall Street close after the weak technology opening, precisely the improvement in market breadth encouraging Jefferies analysts.
The equal-weight S&P 500 has risen approximately 7%–8% from its recent low, while the Nasdaq has retreated approximately 5% from its latest high. The equal-weight index gives each stock a similar influence regardless of company size. That divergence shows a substantial share of stocks recovering even as technology giants continue dragging the major indexes lower.
Jefferies sees the current window as a potential foundation for gains in November and December, supported partly by changes in portfolio positioning. Investment managers have already reduced exposure to technology giants, leaving the market less vulnerable to another wave of selling in those stocks. Seasonality also supports that outlook, as November and December have ranked among the strongest S&P 500 months over recent decades. Historical averages, however, guarantee nothing in a year marked by high interest rates and inflation.
Concerns about financing artificial intelligence companies are directing money into government bonds and pushing yields lower. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is around 5.1%, and Jefferies sees scope for a decline toward 5% and subsequently 4.8%. Such a decline could support equity valuations and improve corporate financing conditions.
Jefferies warns that the correction may not be finished, with the S&P 500 potentially testing its 100-day moving average around 7,600. Against the previous close near 7,744, that represents a possible decline of approximately 2%. BTIG also remains cautious on semiconductor stocks, which could stage a temporary recovery before further declines.
Economic data will continue to determine market direction as the surge in producer prices and concerns about another interest-rate increase complicate the Federal Reserve decision. Warsh remaining silent about the upcoming meeting has calmed the market for now. The number of stocks participating in gains remains a key indicator to monitor. A recovery extending further into banks, industrials, healthcare and smaller companies would strengthen the foundation for gains later in the year.
