30 Oct 2026$FDX FedEx jumps 15.5% to about $126.70 after its first earnings report as an independent company delivered holiday-quarter guidance well above analyst expectations. The stock marks one of the strongest moves on Wall Street during sharp selling in technology and semiconductor shares. FedEx is the largest less-than-truckload carrier in the United States, a market in which one truck collects shipments from several different customers.
$FDX FedEx gains about 3.0%. FedEx Freight separated from FedEx and has traded independently since early June. Separation costs and higher fuel prices were the main reasons for the decline in quarterly adjusted earnings at FedEx Freight.
FedEx Freight reported adjusted earnings of $1.49 per share for the quarter ended in September, beating expectations of $1.36. Earnings declined from $2.10 per share in the corresponding quarter. Revenue rose 8% to $2.44 billion, exceeding expectations of $2.37 billion.
The guidance drove the stock higher, with fourth-quarter adjusted earnings projected at 65 to 75 cents per share against market expectations of just 53 cents. Revenue is projected at $2.30 billion to $2.37 billion. Adjusted operating income is expected to reach $185 million to $205 million, compared with $162 million in the corresponding quarter. Management also raised its adjusted operating income forecast for the seven months through December to $695 million to $715 million from $605 million to $645 million. CFO Marshall Witt attributed the increase primarily to fuel tailwinds and slightly higher shipment volume assumptions.
Revenue rose 9% to $3.28 billion during the four months from June through September, the period in which FedEx Freight operated independently. Revenue per unit of weight increased 9%, but rose just 0.3% excluding fuel surcharges. Daily shipments declined 1%, while average shipment weight increased 1%, leaving tonnage unchanged. Diesel therefore did most of the work, rising about 48% year over year in the third quarter and passing through to customers via fuel surcharges. Higher fuel surcharges are also a major driver of fourth-quarter guidance, which implies 13% revenue growth at the midpoint.
Investors are betting that underlying prices will begin to rise. FedEx Freight has renewed about one-quarter of its contracts since the separation, and CEO John Smith said on the earnings call that contract renewals delivered the strongest pricing performance in recent years. Management expects both volumes and rates excluding fuel to increase in the fourth quarter. An average general rate increase of 6.9% takes effect in early January.
FedEx Freight also said it will soon decide on a dividend and share repurchases. Repurchases are expected primarily to offset dilution as FedEx gradually sells its holdings in the separated company. The risk is clear: falling diesel prices would remove the fuel tailwind, leaving underlying pricing to sustain earnings on its own.
