$GOOGL Alphabet will report its quarterly results on Wednesday, opening earnings season for the technology giants at a sensitive point for the market. Investors will closely examine rising capital expenditures, cloud growth and the amount of free cash flow remaining after unprecedented investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The central question is whether the steep increase in spending has stopped or at least moderated, and whether the company is beginning to capture returns from those investments. The earnings catalyst will determine whether current earnings momentum supports further positioning or intensifies concerns about an AI investment bubble.

Alphabet is also facing company specific challenges, led by the delayed launch of the advanced Gemini 3.5 Pro model, which was expected in June. On Tuesday, one day before the earnings report, Google announced three new models, but the Pro model was not among them. The company is also dealing with the departure of key researchers to competitors and strict regulatory rulings from the European Union. Google must again prove that search, its main revenue engine, remains strong enough to support the rest of the business and justify its approximately $4.25 trillion valuation as the third largest company in the market.

Analyst reports show that the market expects Alphabet to maintain the strong momentum recorded in the first quarter, with consensus forecasts calling for double digit growth in both revenue and profit. These estimates are based on the strong performance of the cloud division and the resilience of traditional search despite concerns about technological disruption. In the previous quarter, cloud revenue grew 63%, driven in significant part by artificial intelligence applications, while the backlog reached $462 billion. These figures support earnings momentum, but the market will focus on whether growth is strong enough to offset the cost of the investment cycle.

The average analyst estimate calls for revenue of $116.8 billion, representing growth of approximately 21.1% from the prior year and a pace similar to the first quarter. Cloud revenue is again expected to be the main growth engine, reaching $22.2 billion and rising 63.3% from the comparable quarter. Google Services, which includes search revenue, is expected to generate $94.3 billion, representing growth of 14.3%. That would mark a slowdown from the growth rate recorded in the previous quarter.

Analysts expect operating profit to rise 29.1% to $40.4 billion, with the operating margin improving by 2.9 percentage points to 35.3% from the comparable quarter. A critical distinction remains between reported profit under generally accepted accounting principles and adjusted profit. Reported profit will include substantial investment revaluation gains, primarily from the Anthropic investment, whose value increased following its latest funding round. Analysts expect reported earnings of $8.38 per share, while revaluations added $2.35 per share in the previous quarter, and adjusted earnings are expected to reach $2.87 per share, representing growth of approximately 24%.

Free cash flow will also be examined closely after totaling $5.3 billion, $24.5 billion, $24.6 billion and $10.1 billion during the last four quarters. The latest figure, covering the first quarter of the current year, represented a 47% contraction from the prior year, primarily because of the massive investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The figure implies a free cash flow yield of only 1.5%, while continued spending threatens to reduce current quarter free cash flow almost completely. Current forecasts place free cash flow between $3 billion and $8 billion.

During the quarter, Google raised $80 billion in capital, including a $10 billion investment from Berkshire Hathaway. The financing is intended to support approximately $180 billion to $190 billion of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment during the current year without completely constraining company free cash flow. The transaction provides funding capacity, but it also increases the importance of demonstrating a clear return on investment. Institutional flows and multiple expansion will depend on whether management can connect infrastructure spending to measurable revenue and cash generation.

One possible outcome combines a beat in core results with an optimistic outlook. Under this scenario, Google Cloud would deliver growth matching or exceeding the analyst consensus range of approximately 63% to 64%, reaching revenue of about $22.2 billion. Management would also provide reassuring explanations for the delays involving Gemini 3.5 Pro and the departure of key researchers, while presenting capital expenditures as investments generating a rapid return. The market could respond positively, allowing the stock to break technical resistance around $357 to $359 and move toward its all time high of $408, similar to the 10.22% daily gain recorded in April 2024.

A second outcome combines a beat in core results with cautious or concerning guidance. In this scenario, second quarter financial performance would remain excellent, but Alphabet would raise its 2026 capital expenditure outlook above the current range of $180 billion to $190 billion without presenting a clear return strategy or while showing continued deterioration in free cash flow. Wall Street concerns about massive spending without a clear profitability horizon would outweigh the strong quarterly results. The stock could decline 7% to 9.5% in one session, as occurred in January 2024 and October 2023, and test the critical technical support level at $341.

A third outcome involves a slight miss in adjusted core earnings combined with a reassuring and constructive management tone. The unofficial average analyst estimate for adjusted earnings is approximately $2.90 per share, and management could argue that any shortfall reflects only a temporary delay. Management would emphasize the cloud division backlog of more than $460 billion and provide encouraging information about projects such as the new Frozen 2 server chip, which is expected to deliver six to ten times greater energy efficiency when running Gemini models. Institutional investors generally show patience with a small single quarter miss when the structural growth case remains intact, which could keep the stock relatively stable within its current trading range of $340 to $350.

A fourth outcome combines a miss in core results with a defensive management tone. This would be the most negative and dangerous scenario for Alphabet, with cloud growth slowing sharply below the disappointing 50% threshold. Weak or evasive explanations regarding accumulated delays in Gemini 3.5 Pro and the departure of talent to competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic would undermine confidence in the company ability to compete in artificial intelligence. A combination of operating slowdown and a defensive tone from Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai could push the stock below $341 and open the way toward $333 and potentially $324.
