23 Dec 2025$RKLB Rocket Lab USA skyrocketed In December by an astounding 88%, making headlines in the American stock market. This surge is not merely a stroke of luck; it's the result of a series of significant operational and business events that have bolstered investor confidence in the company. The primary catalyst for this momentum was the announcement of a substantial contract with the U.S. Department of Defense worth approximately $816 million. This contract is the largest in Rocket Lab history and is part of a broader initiative to establish a satellite system for missile defense in low Earth orbit.
This contract is part of the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture program, aimed at creating a network of hundreds of interconnected satellites that will provide advanced warning and surveillance capabilities. Notably, Rocket Lab is now positioned alongside established defense contractors like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris, marking its debut as a serious player in large-scale defense projects.
Following the announcement, analysts began to revise their forecasts. Needham raised its price target for the stock from $63 to $90, maintaining a buy rating while highlighting Rocket Lab increasing role in U.S. national security. Similarly, Stifel increased its price target to $85 from $75, calling the new contract a significant win. Other analysts noted that this contract enhances the visibility for future revenues.
The response to these developments has been remarkable. In December, Rocket Lab shares surged to around $77, driven by trading volumes that significantly exceeded average levels. The recent contract has dramatically increased Rocket Lab order backlog in its space systems division, climbing from approximately $600 million to $1.4 billion. This growth strengthens the division weight in the overall operations, providing a more stable income source compared to the more volatile launch activities. By combining satellite manufacturing, system components, and space infrastructure, Rocket Lab is laying the groundwork for a long-term revenue stream.
Beyond the financial aspects, this contract signifies recognition of Rocket Lab capability to serve as a prime contractor for complex defense projects. This designation entails responsibility for integration, timelines, and adherence to strict governmental requirements.
As the company continues its robust operational pace, it recently completed its 21st launch of the year using its Electron rocket, which successfully deployed a satellite for a Japanese imaging company. The Electron, a small two-stage rocket, boasts a 100% success rate this year and has conducted 79 missions to date. The next launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
Looking ahead, investors are also excited about the upcoming Neutron rocket, which aims to expand Rocket Lab reach into the medium-lift launch market. Initially slated for launch in late 2025, the Neutron is now expected to take flight in early 2026. Designed to be reusable with a target of up to 20 launches per engine, it comes with a stated price of about $55 million per launch, a significant increase compared to Electron approximately $9 million per launch.
Analysts predict that the profitability from the space systems division will fund the heavy investments required for developing Neutron and expanding launch rates, creating a model where one segment supports the growth of another rather than relying solely on launch market demand.
The presence of 981 institutional investors, including major players like Vanguard, BlackRock, and Capital World Investors, underscores a broader reassessment of the value rather than mere short-term speculation.
As Rocket Lab enters 2026, it does so with significant defense contracts, a solid launch operation, and a clear expansion plan. The lingering question is whether the company can translate its rapid growth into consistent financial performance over time. For those interested in a deeper dive into Rocket Lab potential and future performance, further full analysis awaits your exploration.
