$TSLA rose more than 3% in after-hours trading following a stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter report, giving traders a mix of relief and questions about the road ahead. The electric vehicle giant posted revenue of $24.9 billion, slightly below the $25.1 billion expected, while adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.50 versus the $0.45 forecast. Operating income also beat estimates, landing at $1.41 billion compared to the expected $1.32 billion.

Gross margin emerged as the standout metric, hitting 20.1%, well above the 17% anticipated, signaling operational improvements even as Tesla core vehicle deliveries remain under pressure. The company delivered 418,000 vehicles globally in Q4, a 15% drop year-over-year. Total deliveries for 2025 reached 1.64 million vehicles, roughly in line with expectations but marking the second consecutive annual decline. Challenges include the expiration of the U.S. federal EV tax credit, intensifying competition from legacy automakers and lower-priced models, and reputational effects from CEO Elon Musk controversial public statements.

Despite these headwinds, Tesla vision for autonomy and robotics is moving forward. The company highlighted plans for six new production lines, aiming to start mass production of the Tesla Semi and the Cybercab robotaxi in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, the next-generation Roadster is also set to enter production.

A key focus is Tesla humanoid robot, Optimus. The company announced that Optimus V3 will be unveiled in Q1 2026, with production expected before the end of the year and a potential annual capacity of up to one million units. Elon Musk indicated that sales could begin within the year, although past timelines for Optimus and other ambitious projects have often been optimistic.

Autonomy remains central to Tesla strategy. The number of subscribers to the Full Self-Driving (FSD) service doubled in 2025, and the company continues to pursue regulatory approvals in China and Europe. Tesla has also begun operating some Robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas without safety drivers, though expansion plans for additional cities remain unclear.

Tesla is also strengthening its AI ecosystem with a $2 billion investment in xAI, Musk AI startup that also runs the X platform, highlighting a growing intersection between Tesla vehicle technology and the broader AI strategy of its CEO. For traders and investors, $TSLA now presents a dual narrative: strong profitability offers short-term confidence, but long-term growth hinges on successful execution of robotics and autonomy initiatives that are still years from widespread deployment.

The market will be watching closely to see if Tesla can balance these ambitious bets with consistent vehicle performance, making $TSLA one of the most dynamic, high-risk, high-reward stories in the EV and robotics.
