Wall Street prepares as the U.S. labor market continues to be strong and inflation continues to rise. The Federal Reserve's recent interest rate decisions have also had a significant impact on market mood.
The Spotlight on Employment Reports
The highlight of this week’s economic calendar is the upcoming December employment report. Analysts, including Violeta Todorova from Leverage Shares, project an addition of 153,000 new jobs. The labor market has consistently demonstrated resilience, with weekly jobless claims recently dropping to 211,000—the lowest level since March. Such strong employment figures, coupled with rising inflation (2.7% in November vs. 2.6% in October), provide the Federal Reserve with solid grounds to maintain interest rates at their current levels.
Todorova notes, "The December employment data will provide a crucial snapshot of the labor market in 2024—a year marked by the Fed’s significant rate cuts totaling 1%."
What the Market Rally on Friday Means
Last week concluded on a high note, with major indices rebounding sharply on Friday. The Nasdaq led gains with a 1.8% rise, followed by the S&P 500 (+1.3%) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+0.8%). This marked a strong recovery after Thursday’s subdued session, which saw marginal declines of up to 0.4%.
Despite the rally, markets remain below pre-Christmas levels. Paul Marino of Themes observed, “While the so-called 'Santa Rally' didn’t materialize in its traditional timeframe, earlier gains spurred by Trump’s election dampened expectations. However, optimism persists as investors look toward 2025.”
Tesla: A Volatile Ride
Tesla's stock continues to capture attention with its sharp movements. The company recently reported a 77% surge over the past six months but disappointed with its first-ever annual decline in quarterly deliveries. Following this, Tesla’s shares dropped mid-week but rebounded strongly on Friday, jumping 8.2%.
“Tesla's future remains bright, driven by its upcoming robo-taxi initiatives and momentum in AI,” Marino adds. “Volatility in big tech and semiconductors often creates attractive buying opportunities during sharp corrections.”
2025 Market Sentiment
With the first trading days of the new year underway, market sentiment is cautiously optimistic. Todorova explains, "We expect 2025 to be a positive year for equities, underpinned by the strength of the U.S. economy, interest rate cuts, and corporate profitability growth. However, Trump’s policies introduce both opportunities and risks, with potential inflationary pressures that could force the Fed into tightening monetary policy again."
