Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas upgraded the electric vehicle giant Tesla % from 'hold' to 'buy' and gave it a target price that jumped from $250 to $400. The upgrade comes after the company announced that it is expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities.
"Tesla's autonomous car has been described as the mother of all projects" Jonas said
In the quest to achieve driverless driving, Tesla has developed an advanced supercomputing architecture that will push boundaries and may even put it at an asymmetric advantage in a market valued at approximately $10 trillion. Ten trillion dollars is by all accounts a huge and unprecedented number - about the potential revenue from sales of cars driven by robots, if and when this ambition comes to fruition.
Tesla is investing billions using AI computing to train its autonomous driving software and try to make self-driving taxis, or "robotaxis," a reality.
About two weeks ago it was reported that Tesla will build computers that will contain 10,000 Nvidia processors that will be more powerful than the third strongest supercomputer in the world.
The news shows how the adoption of AI technologies is evolving. Nvidia provides the software and is responsible for the technical development of the field, Tesla applies the technology in what may be the first significant field in which artificial intelligence will truly replace humans - autonomous driving.
