Roblox is an online gaming platform and game creation system that allows users to create and play a wide variety of games. The platform was launched in 2006 and has since grown into a massive community with millions of players and developers.
All the world is talking about ChatGPT, but Last month, Roblox outlined its vision for AI-assisted content creation, imagining a future where Generative AI could help users create code, 3D models and more with little more than text prompts. Now, it's taking its first steps toward allowing "every user on Roblox to be a creator" by launching its first AI tools: Code Assist and Material Generator, both in beta.
Head of Roblox Studio Stef Corazza told an audience at GDC 2023 that they can "help automate basic coding tasks so you can focus on creative work." For now, that means being able to generate useful code snippets and object textures based on short prompts. Roblox's announcement for the tools offers a few examples, generating realistic textures for a "bright red rock canyon" and "stained glass," or producing several lines of functional code that will that make certain objects change color and self-destruct after a player interacts with them.
This kind of technology that already create the viral chatbot ChatGPT is set to radically speed up game development, reduce costs and help players interact with characters in new ways. Game studios are already using the technology for all sorts of tasks, from helping craft virtual scenes and scripts to designing weapons and characters. “There is probably no game that we’re not thinking about some use cases for generative AI,” said Marija Radulovic-Nastic, chief technology officer of creative and development at Electronic Arts the company behind hit franchises such as Madden NFL and The Sims.
There is a huge opportunity for the AI community itself to become creators on the Roblox platform. By enabling 3rd party AI creation services to plug directly into Roblox (likely as a creation experience), Roblox provide a mechanism for their unique creations to be directly offered to Roblox users. For example, if you develop an AI model that builds the most expressive superhero characters based on a combination of text prompts, graphical queues, and photo examples, that capability is something you should be able to offer directly to those Roblox users who want an incredible superhero avatar. So you can envision the community as a force multiplier for generative AI, creating an ecosystem that our creators and users can leverage to create content and tools more effectively.
This technology could unlashed a new age of growth for Roblox, but for now, everyone is ignoring it.
