Despite its popularity with the younger generation, Etsy still faces financial challenges in the near term, leading to an increase in rating and price target. Therefore, the question remains whether it is worth buying.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Etsy, a company that specializes in handicrafts and collectibles, has witnessed significant growth and garnered a younger audience. This surge in popularity may aid in sustaining its momentum for the foreseeable future.
Etsy's stock rating was upgraded from "Neutral" to "Overweight" by analyst Edward Yaroma, who also raised the target price per share for the upcoming year from $135 to $140. Yaroma attributed the increase in rating and target price to the company's growth amongst the younger generation.
"We think the market's core strengths of sustainability, intent and personalization align well with the core values of Generation Z and Millennials," said Yaruma. He added that the focus on product customization and the sheer amount of items available for purchase on the app sets Etsy apart from its competitors.
While Etsy exceeded analysts' sales expectations for the fourth quarter, generating $807 million in revenue compared to $753.9 million the previous year, marking a 12.6% increase, the company still faces financial challenges that could impact its near-term performance. However, Etsy fell short of meeting analysts projected profit per share of $0.82, instead reporting a profit per share of $0.77, which also represents a decline from the previous year's profit per share of $1.11 for the same quarter.
Following the latest reports, the management of the company stated, "Given the changes in consumer spending and the challenging macro environment, we are proceeding with caution." Currently, Etsy's valuation stands at $14 billion, and the stock has declined by 8% since the beginning of the year.
